The World Tonight: Space Odyssey Events -
The Stanley Kubrick Exhibition - Deutsches Filmmuseum Frankfurt am Main,
and the Deutsches Architektur Museum Frankfurt am Main
Courtesy of William Wraucci,
March 31, 2004 to July 4 2004 in Frankfurt am Main
On April 30, 2004, I attended the opening of the Kubrick retrospective in Frankfurt, Germany. This show was made with the full participation of the Kubrick estate and contains many items from Stanley Kubricks personal collection. The show is exhibited in two connected museums, the Film Museum and the Architecture Museum. All Stanley Kubricks films are covered, with each film having its own space or series of rooms.
The rather extensive 2001 area is located in the Architecture Museum.
Some of the Exhibit Highlights include:
Star Child Sculpture. This is the original filming miniature with glass eyes and it is fantastic!
Shot Catalog. The shot shows some of the cards and files Kubrick used to organize shooting and special effects for 2001 A Space Odyssey.
Original Black and White Animation cut outs of all the models. The photo cutouts for the spacecraft include: Satellite Bombs, Orion, Aries, Moonbus, and Discovery. The display panels had many views of a model, which looked like an automated probe, which would be launched from the Discovery. There are also some photos of the satellite bomb models in angles never seen before.
Centrifuge model. I would estimate this model is 1/24 scale. The model is constructed to display both the inside and outside of the Centrifuge set. It is motorized and can rotate. The model is internally lighted with LEDs and is built closed with a camera inside. A monitor is used to show the inside view. Contains a small figure.
HAL EYE Plaque. This is a beautiful replica Hal Plaque made in aluminum and using a real lens.
HAL Brain room re-creation. This room is 2 stories high and lighted in a red color. Breathing sounds from the film are activated when you enter the room.
Moonwatcher costume. The exhibit has the original full body costume worn by Dan Richer. The form fitting costume is made of latex and covered with artificial hair.
Moonwatcher Head. The original costume head has internal mechanisms to control facial expression. This was used for tight shots when Moonwatchers face had to show more expressions such as the lips curling.
Zero Gravity toilet door. This is a full size recreation of the Zero Gravity Toilet door shown in the Aries. The door is corrugated and has backlit toilet instructions.
Dave Bowmans Red Space helmet. The original Red Space Helmet Prop worn by Keir Dullea during the EVA to retrieve the AE-35 unit.
Spacesuit. This costume is the only original spacesuit known to exist. The suit is the yellow suit worn by Gary Lockwood in the film. The gloves and boots are from the green suit found in the emergency airlock. Both the suit and gloves were painted silver because this suit was reused to shoot the Aries/Clavius panorama scene.
Discovery EVA PLISS Backpack. The backpack is an original prop from the film. The prop is made of fiberglass with aluminum and stainless steel detail parts.
Space Station 5 Djinn Sofa and Chair. The sofa and chair are not original and recovered in a pink fabric.
Hamilton 2001 Watch. The functional prototype watch Hamilton made for the film.
Original design sketches for the flight attendant costumes
Concept drawings for the Fisher Space Pen and other future concept ideas
Original storyboards of the TMA landing site. This is series of color drawings showing shots for the landing by the Moonbus in the TMA moonbase. It shows some alternative views not filmed.
Original storyboards for the Stargate sequence
Original storyboards for the Discovery encounter with TMA 2. This sequence also shows the Discovery probe model, later dropped from the film.
Original sketches of the centrifuge.
The Original Work Order from Vickers Engineering Corporation for building the Centrifuge
Original HAL Display Animation Cell Panels.
Many unusual behind the scene photos, including shot a of the Aries cockpit with the head rests on the seats, Moonbus cockpit, Floyds American Express card, Aries flight attendant, Hilton gift area and lots more. Too many to mention.
Miniature Man Ape figures and Monolith Diorama. The diorama is in 1/18 scale with miniature Man Ape figure surrounding a monolith. The foreground is modeled with the parts of the cave, the figures and monolith. The background is made using a front projection rig.
Front Projection Camera/Projector Rig. The Rig consists of the camera, projector and mirror is functioning. The set up allows a visitor to walk inside an African landscape like the one used in 2001.
Large Discovery Filming Miniature Re-creation. One of Scott Alexanders 11-foot model masterpieces. This model approximates the original small Discovery Filming Miniature. The model hangs prominently in the entry between the two museums.
And lots more.
