The World Tonight: Space Odyssey Events -
The Stanley Kubrick Exhibition -
Deutsches Filmmuseum Frankfurt am Main,
and the Deutsches Architektur Museum Frankfurt am Main

Courtesy of Peter Preuss,
March 31, 2004 to July 4 2004 in Frankfurt am Main

While many films were covered most extensively by photos and paperwork like screenplays, production notes, correspondence etc., the "2001" section was the one with the greatest amount of visual materials like photos, props or rebuilt model stuff. Here's a (mostly complete) list of the exhibits:

  • various posters including the US "Star Child" poster with a Kubrick autograph

  • various production stills
  • various publicity stills of fashion designs for clothing as worn in the year 2001
  • original clapper board
  • an original schematic diagram of the slit-scan machine prepared by some English engineering company
  • a large box full of contact prints from various effects shots (a museum guide reported that they found several boxes of this kind)
  • storyboard sketches
  • polaroids for lighting tests
  • animation cels for simulated computer screen readouts (like "COM" and "MEM")
  • cutouts from b/w photos of spaceship models used for the animated spaceship sequences
  • the original star child puppet
  • the Hamilton watch worn by Gary Lockwood
  • cutlery as used by Gary Lockwood and Keir Dullea
  • the red "Djinn" chairs as used on Space Station 5
  • the original "Moonwatcher" costume + special head mask with movable jaw parts
  • a red spacesuit helmet (don't know if this was the original one)
  • original silver spacesuit of Bowman or Poole
  • HAL nameplate (I guess it was the one used in your exhibition in San Jose
  • rebuilt "walkable" HAL brain room with mirrored ceiling to generate the impression of infinity
  • front projection setup of "Dawn Of Man" sequence using the original camera rig
  • rebuilt small scale centrifuge set (accompanied by a 3 1/2 minute production footage video showing scenes from filming in the centrifuge)

The excellent exhibition catalogue has an article on product placement in "2001", thereby focusing on the same aspect we did one year ago with starting the collectibles section on Dennis Gonzales's website! According to the article there should be much more material around to be displayed on the website...

By coincidence they were showing a 20 minute documentary titled "2001: A Space Odyssey - A Look Behind The Future" from 1967 just the day I was visiting. Unfortunately they screened it too late for me to attend, because I was returning home the same day (Frankfurt is about 250 mi from my home - one way). I hope all those copyrights will be cleared some day to make way for a large bonus material section on a future DVD release.

The exhibition in Frankfurt will close on July 3rd. It is scheduled to re-open in Berlin in January (thru April) 2005 at the Martin-Gropius-Bau (a museum venue in Berlin) - but according to the Frankfurt staff this is not yet secured! So hopefully I may have the chance to re-visit it in Berlin, which is a more convenient location for me (only 150 mi one way). If it ever makes it way to the US: go and see it!
