  • 2001 PBS Special Press release:
    • One film critic called the 1968 epic 2001: A Space Odyssey "the best informed dream" because to an extent unprecedented, and never duplicated, writer Arthur C. Clarke and director Stanley Kubrick sought to "get the science right." Now, in its namesake year, it is fascinating to ask; how close did their vision match the actual developments in computer science of the intervening 33 years? Where have they fallen short? Why?

    • A unique and visually rich blend of science documentary, film history and celebration, 2001: HAL's Legacy will take the film's central character, the HAL 9000 computer, as a springboard for the world's leading scientists to explain the current state of areas such as artificial intelligence, computer speech and language understanding, computer vision, computer emotion, ethics and prospects for technology of the 21st century.

This documentary special will be taped in multiple locations across the United States, and in Sri Lanka with Arthur C. Clarke, from September to December 2000. The program will premiere on public television in 2001."

  • 2001 CNN Special Press release:
    • 5-part special on CNN starting Dec. 26 called "2001:A Space Prophecy" comparing science in the year 2001 to science in the movie "2001". http://www.cnn.com/2000/TECH/space/12/21/part.one/index.html

"Rock Hudson may have been one of the first to wonder "what the hell" "2001" was all about. But he wasn't the last. Film critic Roger Ebert was also at the Los Angeles premiere and he reports seeing several members of the audience walk out during the middle of the film. The view in Hollywood, says Ebert, was that director Stanley Kubrick "had become derailed."

Reaction from many of the New York film critics was downright hostile. "Unimaginative," wrote the New Yorker's Pauline Kael. The Village Voice called it a disaster. Joseph Gelmis of Newsday described "2001" as "one of the most bizarre movies ever made."

But audiences loved it, and soon many of the critics and moguls who panned the movie had a change of heart. Two weeks later, Newsday's Gelmis said "2001" was a "masterpiece."

Film fans and critics will continue to debate "what the hell this is about" for some time to come. But "2001" is not only a movie about evolution, monoliths, a star child and the nature of the universe. It is also a movie about science.<

Starting December 26, Headline News Space Science and Technology Correspondent Allard Beutel looks at the technological vision put forth by Kubrick and co-screenwriter Sir Arthur Clarke. In a five-part series called, "2001: A Space Prophecy," Beutel compares science in the year 2001 to science in the movie "2001."

As you watch the series, join us here for Web-exclusive stories about some of the people and companies that are putting their dreams into space."

  • What's in a name?
    • Have you seen 2001 on anything lately, used as a metaphor? I have in my own backyard. Check out San Francisco's Computer User magazine front cover "2001: an earthbound essay." http://www.computeruser.com
    • Also check out Technology Investor, January 2001 issue called "2001: A New Profitable Odyssey."
    • Another magazine out on your newsstand is Time Digital, Jan/Feb. "2001: A Stuff Odyssey." This magazine actually uses reproduction Dave Bowman's space suit!
    • Did I miss anything? You tell me. Send me your email and I'll post it next time.

  • 2001 Commercials:
    • Check out Priceline.Com's latest commercial using theme to 2001 in Jimi Hendrix style.

  • WALLY FIELDS YEAR 2001 COMPLIANT:
    • AT LAST, and at the last minute, my Y2+1 PARTY will be a reality. The event, happening January First, is a sunrise celebration of the great work of Arthur C. Clarke and the late Stanley Kubrick.

I spent the year 2000 moping and griping, thinking such an event wouldn't happen, and not sure how I could MAKE it happen.

Then, at the eleventh hour, designer / architect couple Mark and K. C. Marcinek pulled a rabbit out of a hat and suggested an event they planned at the Trona Pinnacles, in California, Dec 30 - January 1st, 2001. The Marcineks were already planning to go to Trona with other Airstream Trailer fanatics (they've named theirs "Bambi") and other "Eichlerholics". K. C. Marcinek suggested it would be the perfect venue for my Y2k+1 event.

Why? Well, if you go to the following site about the Trona Pinnacles...
...you'll see that the place looks quite alien! (Check the site out in more detail, you'll find a QTVR -Quick Time Virtual Reality- tour of the pinnacles.)

While not quite the African Savannah, here is what I wish to do...

...Watch the REAL SUN rise above a Seven-foot-tall black monolith built for me by friend Raji Raman.

...Jump around in rented Monkey Suits.

...Watch 2001 (at night, of course!) on DVD, projected on a sheet on the side of an Airstream Trailer. So far, one family has a DVD Laptop, another has projection equipment, and I have some Bose Speakers.

...through which I intend to blast Also Sprach Zarathustra at sunrise, and my collection of Gyorgy Ligeti albums. (Ligeti, of course, was the genius who's choral works -as well as his brilliant "Atmospheres", grace the film.)

...Read the last chapters of 2001 in Arthur C. Clarke's voice.

...And basically commune in this alien landscape, celebrating Kubrick and Clarke's masterpiece.

Now I personally haven't totally firmed up all details - like how to get there (there's two entrances to two sides of the park... and you can't drive from one side to the other if you go the wrong way... you have to go around). It's a primitive campground, so if you don't have a trailer, bring a tent, camping gear, and WARM clothes! Further, I don't know how much help I can provide for others, as I'm pretty swamped preparing myself.

However, if you're in the area (San Francisco Bay Area is our starting point- the destination, Trona Pinnacles, is near Hollister / Gilroy) and would like to attend, I can give you more details as they arise. Just email WEIRD Wally Fields, at weird@wallys.com.

I'm probably hanging around the Bay Area till 12/29, to pick up my Ape Suit, and leave the 29th or 30th.

Wally Fields runs a one-man company called Wallys WEIRD Voices (www.wallys.com), devoted to Voice Acting, Audio Production, and Stand up Comedy. He also writes a column called "Wally Fields, Eichlerholic", about his obsession with Eichler homes (Futur-rustic tract homes built primarily in the 50's and 60's and mostly in the San Francisco Bay Area), and has been a devout 2001 fan since 1969, after seeing the film at the Century 21 Theatre.

He can be reached via phone at 510.659.9476 or email at weird@wallys.com.
