Thank you. See you next Wednesday (Frank) REMINDER: "2001: HAL's Legacy" official web site is now open. For schedule to re-run the program, visit http://www.halslegacy.com Posted by, Dennis Gonzales For "2001" and Kubrick fans: http://www.editorsnet.com/brief/mainv/0,7220,31899,00.html Stanley Kubrick Retrospective Follows '2001' By Staff December 10, 2001 04:20 PM PST In January, the American Cinematheque in Hollywood will present "Grand Master: The Films of Stanley Kubrick," which comes on the heels of the Cinematheque's special engagement of "2001," screening with a brand-new 70mm print. "2001" screens from Dec. 20-31, and the retrospective will take place Jan. 11-19. Kubrick's longtime friend, producer and brother-in-law, Jan Harlan, will introduce and discuss his documentary portrait "Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures," and will also join director-actor Sydney Pollack for an introduction to "Eyes Wide Shut," Kubrick's final movie. The schedule of the retrospective is listed below (notes provided by the American Cinematheque). * Friday, Jan. 11 - 7:30 p.m. THE SHINING, 1980, Warner Bros. Edited by Ray Lovejoy, A.C.E. A brilliant exercise in pure supernatural terror, THE SHINING stars Jack Nicholson as a frustrated writer who takes the job of winter caretaker. * Saturday, Jan. 12 - 5:00 p.m. A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, 1971, Warner Bros. Edited by Bill Butler (Oscar nominee, 1972). This benchmark cinematic prophecy proved to be more foresighted than anyone dreamed, as the punk explosion and skinhead-fomented race riots demonstrated in the later '70s. * Saturday, Jan. 12 - 8:30 p.m. SPARTACUS, 1960, Universal Edited by Robert Lawrence (Oscar nominee, 1961). Super Technirama 70mm Print Kirk Douglas stars as the gladiator who leads his fellow slaves in a revolt against Rome, while co-stars Laurence Olivier, Tony Curtis, Jean Simmons, Peter Ustinov, John Gavin and Nina Foch get swept into the firestorm. * Sunday, Jan. 13 - 5:00 p.m. DR. STRANGELOVE OR: HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE THE BOMB, 1964, Columbia Edited by Anthony Harvey. Against a gallery of unforgettable comic grotesques, Peter Sellers stands out in arguably his greatest role as the befuddled U.S. President, veddy British commander Mandrake, and the maniacal Dr. Strangelove. * Sunday, Jan. 13 - 7:00 p.m. BARRY LYNDON, 1975, Warner Bros. Edited by Tony Lawson, A.C.E. Winner of four Academy Awards, BARRY LYNDON stars Ryan O'Neal as Thackeray's flawed 18th-century soldier of fortune, struggling to find his place in a rigidly structured social hierarchy. * Wednesday, Jan. 16 - 7:30 p.m. DAY OF THE FIGHT, 1951 Edited by Julian Bergman and Stanley Kubrick. A documentary portrait of middleweight boxer Walter Cartier preparing for a bout on April 17th, 1950. KILLER'S KISS, 1955, United Artists Edited by Stanley Kubrick. Kubrick's second feature is a compact, moody noir gem about a boxer's vengeful quest when his romance with a neighbor girl leads her employer to murder. THE KILLING, 1956, United Artists Edited by Betty Steinberg. Kubrick's tough-as-nails heist film about a robbery at a racetrack features an incredible rogues' gallery of great character actors, including Sterling Hayden and Coleen Gray. * Thursday, Jan. 17 - 7:30 p.m. LOLITA, 1962, MGM, Warner Classics Edited by Anthony Harvey. Kubrick's hilariously bleak and twisted portrait of sexual obsession (based on Vladimir Nabokov's infamous novel) stars James Mason as ultra-fussy college professor Humbert Humbert. * Friday, Jan. 18 - 7:30 p.m. PATHS OF GLORY, 1957, United Artists Edited by Eva Kroll. During WWI, French officer Kirk Douglas finds himself in a maze of catch-22 contradictions when he decides to defend three of his men against charges of cowardice from insane general George Macready. * Saturday, Jan. 19 - 5:00 p.m. STANLEY KUBRICK: A LIFE IN PICTURES, 2001, Warner Bros. Home Video Kubrick's longtime friend, producer (and brother-in-law) Jan Harlan created this riveting portrait of the maestro, from his childhood in the Bronx through his early days as a photo-journalist, his first features, the furor over LOLITA and A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, right up to his final days working on EYES WIDE SHUT. * Saturday, Jan. 19 - 8:30 p.m. EYES WIDE SHUT, 1999, Warner Bros. Edited by Nigel Galt. EYES WIDE SHUT is an unnerving portrait of a seemingly-happy couple (played fearlessly by Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman) whose lives are thrown into turmoil when they look beneath the bourgeois surface of their marriage to find a terrifying warren of self-deceit, sexual obsession and emotional betrayal.
