UPDATE - February 8, 2001:
Greetings from Dennis Gonzales
33 years later.
- The San Jose Tech Museum gave me a sneak preview of the 2001
and Robert T. McCall exhibit called "2001:Desination Space."
My general feeling is the same feeling I felt when I first seen 2001
on screen, awe-inspiring. Exhibit designer, Tina Cosby has captured
the essence of 2001's look and feel. The 2001 Tech team's
research is educational and first rate. The exhibit is designed to inform
people that never seen or heard of the film. I was more than impress
when I took the chance to play with some of the toys on hand which are
designed to teach you about the real space and computer technology that
was predicted in the film. I hung around by myself for awhile and sucked
in the sights and sounds of 2001: A Space Odyssey. I just sat
there on the floor like a kid again. It was hard to believe that the
exhibit is really happening and the excitement to tell Clarke and many
other people behind the concept that they will not be disappointed!
The Robert McCall section was equally awesome. There are many paintings
on hand. McCall's artwork was a huge impact to me since I first seen
his 2001 paintings in print in a theater in 1968. Ever since,
I've been following his works of the future and mankind's presence in
space. I can see how many great artists of today that do film work were
influenced with McCall's signature.
I also took a quick tour of another new exhibit called "Journey
To The Planets." This solar system trip to the planets reminded
me of how one would feel if they were standing on the bridge of the
enterprise. There are 3 huge screen surrounding you as you control a
kiosk to the planets.
The Tech Museum has truly brought Stanley Kubrick's and Arthur Clarke's
vision to life, which is probably one of the most challenging efforts,
anyone has done in a long time if ever. This is the vision I had hoped
when the idea was launched 3 years ago from my first exhibit.
The exhibit will opened to the press and Tech Museum Members tomorrow
evening, Feb. 8, 2001. The grand opening is Friday, Feb. 9, 2001.
