UPDATE - February 16, 2001: Greetings from Dennis Gonzales 33 years later.
I had the opportunity to meet Robert T. McCall's daughter, Catherine A. McCall. She was very intrigue by the whole project of bringing together film props and memorabilia in conjunction of her father's famous works. It was a perfect marriage to compliment space exploration and science through the arts. We talked about how her father's work and how he sets up technical sketches before brush strokes since I myself use to paint. We also talked about web design since she herself maintain the McCall site. Visit the McCall Studios web site at http://www.mccallstudios.com. Dr. David Stork was on hand for book signing and short lecture. I got the chance to see his upcoming PBS HAL 9000 special at the pre-reception. It was actually a teaser but it will be worth the wait! For further information, visit his web site, http://www-psych.stanford.edu/~stork/HALTalks.htm Piers Bizony's new edition of his book, 2001: filming the future is selling at the Tech with new photos and new book cover! Robert T. McCall's famous Space Station One painting is the new cover. My guest, Valerie Prigent, was part of the exhibition as she was dressed as the Space Station 5 employee. She wore the famous pink outfit designed by Hardy Amies and reproduced by local costume designer, Andrea Edelman. Andrea is consider the best in her field. You may visit her web site at http://www.mina-hummingbird.com. Valerie greeted guests before going downstairs to 2001:DESTINATION SPACE exhibition. We will have photos on-line soon. To know more about 2001: A Space Odyssey fashion, read http://www.modernmatters.com/style.asp Television station ARTE from Germany and France was on hand for a segment about Stanley Kubrick and "2001: A Space Odyssey." Crews were there for interviews about the film and the "Experience." Of course I retold my story to program director Thomas Halaczinsky how this whole exhibit project started from seeing the film for the first time. He was amused about me watching "2001" several hundred times since 1969. What was so funny about that? His segment of the Tech Museum will be part of the "Space Odyssey" segment from ARTE magazine titled "Metropolis". The segment is about how the arts inspired space exploration and computer science today. So far, they've covered the Arthur C. Clarke day in Washington and will visit Robert T. McCall soon. The program will be shown on German and French television. We'll keep you posted when "Metropolis" will televised the special. If you read French or German, you can visit their web site at http://www.arte-tv.com/ Speaking of Europe please read the latest announcement about a "2001" film release and about East Germany's sci-fi film "Signals" below this paragraph. Since the pre-reception party, Press and TV coverage has been spotlighting 2001:DESITINATION SPACE and Wally Fields, who was behind HAL 9000 kiosk. We will provide QuickTime files soon on any television shows about the exhibit. In the meantime, you can read more about 2001 Tech Team members, Mike Drennan and Tasmyn Front in the San Francisco Chronicle and Wally fields in the San Jose Mercury news in http://www.2001exhibit.org/press.html. Articles contain photos of the exhibition. Arthur C. Clarke sent his greetings to the Tech's party and Dr. David Stork but unfortunately it was too late for me to make any announcements.
If you have any questions regarding 2001:DESTINATION SPACE, please contact Kris Covarrubias, Public Relations Manager at (408) 795-6226 or kcova@thetech.org. Regarding requests about the "2001" radio show I did over two years ago, the CD-ROM is for the press and Internet/TV media and not for sale. I've had requests to buy the CD but I must remind you, that you need to provide identification of your news affiliated. Any request I've gotten so far will be granted but I will throw away any mail if you do not have the proper identification. You need to go through Voice Print Identification before I send you a CD. We've have gotten tremendous compliments about the 2001: A Space Odyssey Exhibit web site. We are currently revamping the site for better access to our content. I've also received requests about developing "2001" exhibits at other events. It's not possible to just throw up an exhibit because it takes proper planning and weeks to develop and funding. I do not have an exhibit on wheels but I certainly can provide some "2001" items (non-rare items) if you have facilities that will insure and secure the items and of course the funding to provide the exhibit. If you're local, then it would be easier to provide information about "2001" and the exhibit at the Tech Museum. Please understand, no film prop at the Tech Museum's 2001: A Space Odyssey exhibit is included for any local event or anywhere else for that matter. For further clarification about the 2001:DESTINATION SPACE, contact Naida Kendrick, at 408-795-6224 or naida@thetech.org. See you next week. -Dennis Gonzales Posted by, Dennis Gonzales Posted by: Dennis Gonzales 2001: Exhibit |
