| Nov. 28, 2001: Greetings from Dennis Gonzales 33 years later.
All I can say about the new print of "2001" is WOW! The Castro Theater has an excellent print of "2001: A Space Odyssey". The crisp version looks as if it was made yesterday. You can actually read almost all the computer readouts & signage like never before. The Kubrick's version of the planet Jupiter was detailed like the JPL/NASA images we have today. You can see cloud color bands of the planet's surface, which makes the film up to date, which makes Kubrick's ahead of his time. You can see the fabric of all the costumes in their true colors, and in detail as well as the props. You can see the fisheye lens identification markings off HAL at various angles and you can see the HAL 9000 faceplate that was probably displayed at the Tech Museum, inside the central tunnel of the Centrifuge where Dave and Frank walk through! The music of course is magnificent. I haven't heard Strauss's "The Blue Danube" in a theater since my trip to Vienna, Austria two years ago at a Mozart festival. But overall, it was like seeing the film for the first time. Even the print that I saw 6 years ago, which was the best print since the 70s, at the Kubrick Film Festival, cannot match up to the level of today's new version of "2001". The sound system is okay, and it's not Cinerama but certainly, it is well worth the 7 bucks to see the film several times during it's run. I'm fortunate to have a train route next to my apartment that rides into San Francisco and a bus that goes directly to Castro and Market streets. If you live in the bay area like myself, you can take BART to the Castro from the East Bay. I was there early to get great seats along with two other "2001 heads", Mark Friber and Wally Fields. The evening crowd filled the theater and the house organist entertains us with film music. Have you ever heard "Also Sprach Zarathustra" on a pipe organ? There are a lot of collectible vintage posters displayed in the lobby as well as my "2001 exhibit" flyers, "Gary Lockwood" flyers, "The Making of 2001: A Space Odyssey" books (for purchasing only) and new "2001" posters and lobby cards to gawk at. I also plan to visit LA after Christmas to see "2001" at the Egyptian theater. So if anyone on the list want to join me for a holiday trip on the train to Southern California or just to meet up with me to see the film, let me know. I sent two thumbs up to Warner Brothers yesterday and they were happy to hear the report card. Plus they sent me new dates/places for the re-release, The Astor Plaza, in New York will open 12/14-24/01. I've just posted (unedited) my entire trip to Kennedy Space Center / STS-105 Launch last August in the Introduction section called "32 Years Later". In my story, you'll see pictures of the Visitor Center's fantastic attractions, the launch pads, the Apollo/Saturn V Center and of course the liftoff of the STS-105. The experience inspired me to continue this web site and keep promoting space exploration. Go to http://www.2001exhibit.org/intro/ksc.html For local exhibit and Beatles fans, thank you for visiting my last exhibit. There are a few more days left for "the art of Yellow Submarine" exhibition at the San Mateo Library in California. So far I am getting favorable feedback about the local event. You can visit my web page about the exhibit at http://www.infinex.com/~exhibit/ys/index.html Next year WardTV is working with the Learning Channel about "2001: A Space Odyssey". Once again, they've asked for our help as we did for Mortarotti & Ramirez Production for EDS, Comdex. I've sent them a list of people that helped Mortarotti & Ramirez who produce the 2001'ish video presentation project last month. In time they will contact you (You know who you are) and I'll keep the list posted on the project in the next few months! Speaking of Mortarotti & Ramirez Production, Edward Martinez is writing up a story about his experience on the set of the "2001" with pictures. We should have the story posted very soon. And speaking of Comdex, Mike Jackson has sent me a link to read more about the event http://www.startrek.com/news/news.asp?ID=121828 The Arts section in the Fans category has been updated with a new "2001" feature artist, John LeMaitre, and his version of "My Star Child." Go to http://www.2001exhibit.org/arts/fan.html If you have "2001" art that you want to display to the world, send me email and the digital piece. My Yahoo.Com "2001" photo album has been updated with pictures from the Tech Museum sent to me by my first volunteer to this "2001" campaign, Helene Seefred. Pictures are the displays of Robert McCall's paintings and some of the "2001" displays. Go to http://briefcase.yahoo.com/elusive9440 The Links page has now been updated. On this page are all the "2001" web sites from all over the world! If your web site is missing from this list, and you want to be on it, send email so I can review it. http://www.2001exhibit.org/links.html The sitemap page has been updated once more because of the new feature in the Introduction section. Go to http://www.2001exhibit.org/sitemap.html The Credits page is updated because of new additions to the list of many people that help me build the "2001 Exhibit" web site and newsletter. Go to http://www.2001exhibit.org/credits.html It's been a very busy October and November for me, so, if I haven't answer your emails or snail mail or return mail, I will do so after today. I apologize for my lateness and delays and there is no excuse for my performance. I had just to many things on my plate and I was sick but hope to have more free time after mid December. Keep sending the latest "2001/2010" news and keep checking the press section for updates. http://www.2001exhibit.org/2001expo.htm We are now coming to down to the home stretch for a fantastic year of "2001" and the holidays are upon us once again. This year has been a very slow year for me in the tech field but I'm surviving and it will only get better for all of us. We knew it was a recession after it was announce this week but we also know that it will not last that long. Whatever faith or personal "guidance" you practice, I want to thank you for your support the past 4 years and wish you a peaceful and safe holiday. And see you next Wednesday (Frank). REMINDER: "2001: HAL's Legacy" official web site is now open and don't forget the program will be shown on PBS for nationwide airing this week in each of the three time zones.
