Sep 4, 2001:

Greetings from Dennis Gonzales

33 years later.

In the behalf of the Tech Museum of Innovation and I, thank you for visiting "2001:DESTINATION SPACE". The exhibition was a complete success and I hope you return to visit the Tech's next exhibition Freedom 7 from the Mercury project. For further information, go to http://www.thetech.org.

In the past 3 years, I've dedicated myself reaching out to people that were also pursuing a common goal to celebrate in the year 2001, the greatest science fiction film of all time, "2001: A Space Odyssey." The experience had opened up my mind to many different interpretations about the film and it's meanings behind each frame.
It also helped me go backwards when I was first inspired by the film as a boy to rejuvenate my hunger for knowledge about space exploration and the metaphysics in the film and books. Kubrick explored many of these ideas in the 60s. I hope to continue to do that after the celebrations are over.

I'd like to thank the Tech "2001" team staff that built, researched,
    promoted and handled the exhibition.

    • Katherine Whitney
    • Mike Drennon
    • Tina Cosby
    • Tasmyn Scarl Front
    • Anita Llewellyn
    • Staci Daley
    • Kris Covarrubias

I also like to thank Robert Emmett from KFJC FM from Los Altos Hills, California for helping me promote all 3 exhibitions (Space:1999, San Mateo "2001" and "2001:DESTINATION SPACE") on the air and Internet that past 3 years. He also was responsible in getting me to send my press kit to the Tech Museum during my exhibition. The press kit was delivered to Naida Kendrick and the rest as they say was history. Of course, Robert and I can't forget the many people responsible for "2001". Thank you Gary Lockwood, Fred Ordway, Harry Lange and of course, Dr. Arthur C. Clarke.

I also give kudos to Dr. David Stork for firing me up 4 years ago at his San Francisco Exploratorium lecture. I had no idea what I wanted to do to help celebrate "2001" in 2001 but when I came home after the lecture, all I talked about to my friend Lanajean Vecchione was about Stork's lecture. Until she suggested I display my "2001" collectibles in public. Lanajean was the catalyst in pushing me in the right direction and also shutting me up about the lecture.

I also want give kudos to my first "2001" exhibit editor, Helene Seefred who listened to my ideas at a Denny's Restaurant outside NASA Ames Research Center about what I wanted to do for 3 years. She was crazy enough to believe me. I guess great ideas start on napkins.

I also like to thank the "2001" collectors because without them, we wouldn't have a "2001" exhibit.

    • Phil Vendy from Underman's 2001
    • Dennis Gilliam
    • Frederick Ordway
    • Wally Fields
    • Chris Randell
    • Scott Alexander
    • Mike Jackson
    • Mark Blunck

They trusted me with their stuff and I appreciate that. Included on this list of participants are Dr. David Stork and Robert McCall for their participation and inspiring us with their art.

And last but not least, my photographer, Mark Watson who documented 3 years of the project on the web. Without his support, I couldn't do this project without him. The same appreciation goes out to all my close friends that kept me focused the past 2 years so I can dedicate my personal time to the "2001" project.

All these people I've mentioned in this email helped me celebrate "2001: A Space Odyssey" the way the film should be recognized because it was important. It was our way to educate and respect the greatest science fiction film in cinema history. It was a great way to honor Kubrick, Clarke and the production crew and actors. This is the motive behind the exhibits.

Of course we are not done yet, there are many people involved in the "2001" exhibit web site and we should be completely done by the end of the year. You can learn more about the web site developments by reading the "Projects in progress or underway" list in this email. I also have many "2001" and "space" projects in the works the next 8 months that resulted from the success of the "2001" projects.
I'm also in the process of getting ready for my last public exhibit, "The Yellow Submarine" coming to the San Mateo Library, November 1, 2001. I'll keep you posted on that groovy gig.

Next week, I'll have some new "2001" news and updates and not bore you with the credits.

    See you next Wednesday (Frank)
