April 3, 2002:

Greetings from Dennis Gonzales

Space Shuttle Atlantis is scheduled to lift off from Kennedy Space Center, Fla., on Sunday, April 7, 2002. STS-110 will be the 13th shuttle mission to visit the International Space Station. During this mission, Space Shuttle Atlantis will be delivering the S0 Truss, and the STS-110 crew will conduct four spacewalks to install the new component. The S0 will be the centerpiece of the station's exterior framework and sets the stage for future expansion and research. For information on the mission, visit http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/shuttle/. And to see the mission on the Internet, visit http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/realdata/nasatv/schedule.html or http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/realdata/nasatv/index.html

I like to thank Paul Bailey from Boulder, CO for donating his 5.00 for our 2002 Webby Awards entry. Paul is no stranger to competition and understands the costs involved. Please take the time to see his website at http://home.attbi.com/~insectattack/2001craft.htm.

    Website Update:
A portion of the Spaceship category from the Technology and Science section has been moved in the Arts section under Models category or will be by Thursday, April 4th. Spaceships will expand in the next couple of weeks as we focus in "2001" technology. However, we will continue to expand the Model category and welcome model makers to contribute their "2001" model kits in this category. Iím also looking for talented model makers and digital/print artists to design and build spaceships and other technology from Sir Arthur C. Clarkeís "2061" and "3001" books. The request is part of my campaign to convince moviemakers the importance of bringing the books to the big screen. And using this website is a palette in behalf of Sir Arthur C. Clarke. Visit the section called "Models" at http://www.2001exhibit.org/arts/models.html

Since the timeline in the Technology section was updated last week, according to the "2010" timeline, some events have been taking place as of today:

2002: The Chinese do not sign the UN Space Treaty.
Feb. 12, 2002: TMA-1 photo analysis taken from moon satellite.
Dr. Floyd meets Professor Chang at the IUA conference (International Astronomical Union Congress) who will be the first and last human being of China's Tsien mission to Europa eight years from now. This was right before China's Second Cultural Revolution.

    Artists Spotlight:
Our featured artist this week is Gunther Anderson from Boston, Massachusetts who has re-created the award winning "2001" spacesuit. Visit the Gallery section to see Guntherís work at http://www.2001exhibit.org/arts/gallery6.html.

    2001 Influence Alert:
Last night, when writing this newsletter, I watched the Simpsonís take on "2001" meets NASA. The premise of the story that NASA attempts to boost up TV ratings based on their boring manned space launches in attracting an audience to support the NASA cause. The answer to their dilemma is to put a blue-collar worker into space with astronaut Buzz Adrin. Homer is hired for the job and with the flair of Ron Howardís "Apollo 13", Homer and Buzz experience a "Space Odyssey " adventure. From The Blue Dunbe space chip sequence to the Space Pod rescue, this episode was by far the best "2001" satire!
After the show, I tuned in the radio to hear Hugh Wolff Conduct Also Sprach Zarathustra with the San Francisco Symphony at the Davies Symphony Hall. This was the same show I heard two weeks ago at the Flint Center in Cupertino, CA.

If you have "2001/2010" news to report to the World Tonight, please send them to me! Until then...

    See you next Wednesday (Frank).
