April 24, 2002:

Greetings from Dennis Gonzales

    IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO ALL ARTISTS:
Recently, Discovery Communications, whose cable channels include Discovery, The Travel Channel, TLC, Animal Planet and BBC America, has said it's likely to eliminate end credits within the next month. Discovery says it will direct viewers who want to see them to a Web site.
This action will obviously cause a ripple affect through the television industry and I for one see no benefit in deleting credits. Professional model maker, Alan Nadel reported to the World Tonight his opinion to Discovery against the disappearance of credits at the end of TV shows. I suggest you do the same:

This article appeared in today's Newsday:

    Email from Alan to Discovery.com:

    Subject: TV Program Closing Credits

    Hello

I have just finished reading the Associated Press' recent article about the Discovery Channel looking to eliminate the closing credits completely from programs. I found the article both frustrating and infuriating.

I read that you (and other networks) believe that viewers are not interested in closing credits and tend to change channels when they roll. Has anyone looked into why this is so? In recent years, networks have squeezed the credits and sped them up to the point of being unreadable only so they can hawk the video of the show just seen or show a loud and intrusive promo for another show. It's YOU who have made closing credits irrelevant. There are many of us, despite what you may believe who do enjoy reading closing credits. I really don't believe, however, that anyone will go to the Discovery.com website just to look for program credits.

I recently did some work for the Cronkite-Ward Company for an upcoming program for TLC (The Great Books: 2001: A Space Odyssey). I, as well as others, who worked on this project, was not offered any money for my work, nor am I getting any. My sole reward for helping out with this documentary was expected to be screen credit. This, in turn, would hopefully help me to find subsequent work in the field of film and television. YOU ARE PLANNING TO TAKE THIS AWAY FROM US!

Please reconsider this decision. There are many of us who enjoy closing credits and depend on them for our livelihoods.

    Thank you
    Alan Nadel

Ben Bova / Arthur Clarkeís Film Project Update:
Science fiction writers Sir Arthur Clarke and Ben Bova have recently informed us on their activities with the film industry. First, Iíve updated Sir Clarke on the recent filmmaking campaign in creating spaceship models and technology from his books 2061 and 3001 for the 2001Exhibit.Org website. He reported back to us that he has high hopes that *Fountains of Paradise* may be filmed as he have been sent an excellent script. Mr. Ben Bova has shown interests in working together after our discussion at the Astrobiology Conference at NASA two weeks ago and reviewing the website. Weíll keep you up to date as soon as we get them. For information about the Clarke project, continue to read this newsletter.

THE WEBBY AWARDS REPORT: 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY COLLECTIBLES EXHIBIT. The Webby Awards review phase, and a short list of those with the highest scores in each category have been passed on to the Nominating Judges for consideration. This doesnít mean we made that list but if we didnít, consider thousands of entries were received from 36 countries and 44 states! Itís a very hard number to be considered but you never know. Nominees will be announced on Tuesday, April 29, 2002.

As you know, the Webby Awards is about recognizing websites with good content in a category. Since we are non-profit, the fee is 95.00 to enter the event and we are asking 5.00 per mailing list member to send to us to cover costs if they want to. Weíve been given an extension to apply but the organizers have given the "2001" Exhibit.Org a place for the awards without fee for the time being.
