Jan 2-9, 2002:

Greetings from Dennis Gonzales

This is the first newsletter without the number of years I first saw "2001" because we are moving on into a new direction for the website. Now that 2001 has past, we'll continue the newsletter and website for a long-term goal. More about that later.
Network Solutions is experiencing technical problems during domain name renewal, this is the reason why the www.2001exhibit.org is not working. We should have the DN active in a few days. In the meantime, please use http://www.infinex.com/~exhibit/anything with html as an extension. On the record, their customer service is the worst in Internet history and since I work around the corner from VeriSign, I am paying a visit to their offices about this downtime we are experiencing. If you need to talk to me about "2001/2010", just email me at my second address, elusive94401@yahoo.com. Unfortunately, my mailing scripts do not work for the moment so I am sending this email to you from work.

We still have a few "Space Odyssey" projects that are in the works plus we're following the up and coming "2001" television program on the Emmy award-winning great books series on The Learning Channel.
I should be wrapping up some parts of the website soon and pick up where I left off with my mail. Again, sorry for the delay.
But for the new direction, I like to expand the site and invite model makers and artists all over the world to help out on a number of projects in the next 12 months. To learn more about this project, please read Pete Howell's article on the Toronto Star.Com, http://www.thestar.ca/NASApp/cs/ContentServer?pagename=

    Or

just go to the World Tonight's Radio/Internet & TV category page, http://www.infinex.com/~exhibit/press/press1.html

The Tech Museum "2001: Destination Space" radio-Internet show.
I now have the one-hour radio show with Arthur C. Clarke, Harry Lange, Frederick Ordway and Dr. David G. Stork on-line in the World Tonight section's Press section Media - Radio/Internet category. Everything is wav format in 6 segments (10 mintes each) but we'll have mg3 files soon. But we do have the entire show in mg3 format to download. Go to http://www.infinex.com/~exhibit/press/radio-net.html

    More "2001" Releases.
James Lechner reviews "2001" at the Loews Astor Show place in New York with pictures in the World Tonight section in Film Reviews at http://www.infinex.com/~exhibit/press/2001films.html!
Check out his cute son's "2001" spacesuit!
If you have pictures to share at a film showing, please send them by email or snail mail but at my work address. My email account can't handle large jpegs. My address to send images, jitweb@mail.arc.nasa.gov

    More "2001" Influences.
Well not really, I watched The Simpsons a few nights ago which they and the whole town are brain washed into an occult religion except for Marge. She escapes "the farm" so she can be an individual and try to come back to release her family. Sound familiar?
While Marge escapes, the Prisoner theme music is heard as Rover begins the pursuit.

    "2001" Music.
Walter Conkrite hosted the Vienna's Philharmonic Orchestra's New Year Concert, broadcast on PBS worldwide. The concert is performed each year at the famous Golden Hall of the Musikverein, which I visited three years ago and heard "The Blue Danube". The Vienna's Philharmonic Orchestra performed the "The Blue Danube" at the end of their concert. Even when you are in a concert hall, I still can't get the Orion III out of my head when an orchestra plays "The Blue Danube".

    What's in a name?
My town is still playing with words in the New Year. On Jan. 1, 2002, the San Mateo Weekly Independent looks back at 2001, titled "2001: A year that won't be forgotten."

Sir Arthur C. Clarke sends out his greetings to the world:
One year ago, Dr. Clarke sent us a personal greeting for the New Year we all been waiting since 1968.

"As we approach 2001, I send my greetings and best wishes to Dennis Gonzales and his colleagues.

Perhaps no other year before or since 1984 has been awaited with such eager anticipation (and, I like to think, with far less apprehension). I have no idea why Stanley chose the year - it was his idea - but the intelligent minority of this world will mark 1 January 2001 as the real beginning of the new century and millennium.

As I have told most interviewers in recent weeks, I will be trying to catch some sleep while the rest of you usher in 2001. Of course I'm glad to be here to welcome the year, and very sad that Stanley cannot join me."

    Sir Arthur C Clarke
    27 December 2000

This year, he sends his greetings to everyone that has supported his work and "2001".

    EGOGRAM 2001

"Obviously this year, of all years, deserves an Egogram but it will be a short one, as befits a year indelibly stained with the events of 11 September. (I am still spooked by the fact that, in 1973, I chose that very date in Rendezvous with Rama for the worst disaster in human history.)

I am happy to say that my adopted family is fine we were all together for Christmas, as the two older girls, Cherene and Tamara, were back from University in Australia. They are now beautiful young ladies, and Melinda is already over 12. My beloved Chihuahua, Pepsi, must be nearing that age, but is still quite active, which is more than I can say for myself as I am now completely wheel-chaired. However, I can still play a vicious game of Table Tennis, as long as I can lean on the table.

I lost one good friend during the year Roger Caras, on 19th of February. He was Stanley Kubrick's Vice President and I am also grieved that Stanley did not live to see the year he made famous.

Although I hope never to leave Sri Lanka again, I did the next best thing by appearing as a convincing 3-D Hologram at the Comdex Exhibition in Las Vegas on 13 November. That same week, 16th November, brother Fred represented me very adequately at the Arthur Clarke GALA at the Playboy Mansion, and was able to hobnob with the people who were really there, such as Patrick Stewart, Buzz Aldrin, James Cameron and Morgan Freeman who is now filming RAMA.

Iíve now become involved in the Internet and took part in a Web discussion with Leonardo DiCaprio, on 28th September, in aid of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. Apparently there are numerous Websites devoted to me, but I have never had time to look at them.

I have managed to get away from my Colombo office several times to stay at Scuba Villa, 101 kms south of here, and to visit the Arthur Clarke Model School at Baddegama, celebrating its first anniversary.

Now that I am safely past my 84th birthday, I really have nothing to grumble about except embarrassing lapses of memory: events which happened only last week seem to have mysteriously disappeared. However, as long as I can still spell `Alzheimerí, I am not too worried.

    My best wishes to everyone!
    Arthur Clarke

    28 December 2001."
