| Jan 16, 2002: Greetings from Dennis Gonzales
Mark Watson and I are planning to photo shoot Harrison A. Lorenzana's HAL 9000 model, and the HAL 9000 brain-room, from the set from Mortarotti / Ramirez Productions "2001: The Future is Not What It Use To Be". The Brain-room was created by Josh Koral from Acme Scenery (acmescenery.com). We also have a repilca of the Discovery 8-screen / HAL 9000 panel for the Lunar Model HAL kit built by model maker Vince Hoffman. Also included in our photo shoots is the silverware from "2001", owned by Terry Lynn Boblet and Lunar Models "ARIES-1B" shuttle and space pod kits and Glenn Ludgate's AE-35 Dish and TMA-1 diorama (both in 1/12 scale). There will also be some additions to the furnishing and fashion section by March and sometime this year Glenn Ludgate will have the "2001" GM car for this website. To follow what we are doing, read the Projects in progress or underway page. Voice-actor of the Tech, HAL 9000 fame, Wally Fields doesn't think it's a big deal to mention this but I do think it's a big deal. Last week, he dropped off the face of the Earth and the reason why is that he checked himself into the hospital with sleep apnea but after a chest x-ray was diagnosed with an enlarged heart. This is genetic related, and not necessarily life threating. But he is now prescribed medication for his heart arythmia and a good diet. Take care of yourself HAL. Last week, Mark Watson and I went to MacWorld in San Francisco and saw the futuristic new iMac. We had a very productive time there but I think the crowds were less than previous years and the atomosphere was more business than pizzazz. I like it that way. "2001" fan Mike Feeney informs us about the fantastic Kubrick-approved Apple commercial featuring Hal is still available for download at: More "2001" Releases. http://www.archiviokubrick.it/film/2001/extra/apple.html I discovered a cool software tool from Onadime.Com at MacWorld. The Onadime player generates images continuously in response to your movements and your music. The pychedelic colors and textures remind me of the Stargate sequence from "2001". You can get a free demo at http://www.onadime.com Also, Apple gives you for your iTunes software collection, the Visualizer. The visuals remind me of the Stargate sequence from "2001" as well. You can only use the Visualizer on iTunes which is free to download on System 9 and 10. the Visualizer is a onscreen graphics that pulse to the beat of your music. To get iTunes, go to http://www.apple.com/itunes/ To get Visualizer, go to http://www.apple.com/itunes/theater/visualizer.html or to download, http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/audio/ arkaosvisualizer.html Candy: Robert Cary reports to the World Tonight that he noticed in the credits for the 1968 Buck Henry film "Candy." He was pretty surprised to see the astronomical animations at the beginning and end of the film. They'd seem pretty tame by today's CGI effects standards, but they were pretty advanced for a film produced in 1968. So, I fast forwarded my DVD through the closing credits until I found the credit for those special effects. Sure enough, it was Douglas Trumbull. He guessed that this was the first movie Douglas done post-2001 because the multi-plane 3D starfield fly throughs were somewhat more advanced than the effects he'd done for Kubrick. "I'd like to create a new collaboration between artists and scientists in this country (England) like I did with Dr. Sundin in Sweden." - Daniel Oberti, sculpture artist. If anyone is in Oxford, England in August or in my own backyard, Mt. View California, make sure to visit sculpture artist, Daniel Oberti from Sonoma County in Sebastopol California. Like the Tech Museum's "2001:DESTINATION SPACE" exhibit, Mt. View Visual Arts Committee will be displaying Daniel's works at City Hall rotunda at 500 Castro St. (outside NASA Ames Research Center). Oberti's ceramic designs are a combination of astronomy, history, cosmology, alchemy and mathematics. The title of Oberti's show is "Let the Beauty You Love Be What You Do," taken from a quotation from the Sufi mystic Rumi. The exhibit features 49 ceramic sculptures that include spheres. alters, obelisks, "star dance" platters, sundials, time keepers, "shadow catchers," and Japanese-inspired tsukubai. I for one am always supportive with artists that combine art and science as an inspiration from the cosmos. For further information about the show, go to http://www.danieloberti.com Pages updated. "2001" fan, James.w. Lechner submits two recent magazines about "2001" in our magazine category. http://www.2001exhibit.org/press/2001zines10.html We've added and updated the World Tonight Newsletter for Jan. 2002 and Dec. 2001 pages. http://www.2001exhibit.org/press/2001exhibit.html Gary Lockwood's website domain name is not working and we're working on the problem.
