| July 17, 2002: Greetings from Dennis Gonzales I took a week off from the newsletter due to the fact we have 4 new articles and pictures on the website that I was working on. In the meantime, everyone at NASA is anticipating the return of the Space Shuttle. It seems that STS-107 mission to the International Space Station is on hold until the end of the month, which by that time, two of the orbiters would be in a position to launch at about the same time. This would lead managers of the Shuttle and International Space Station Programs to decide which flight would occur first. For further information about STS-107, visit: http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/shuttle/
Website Updates: We showcase Ian Walsh's technical plans to Discovery One, which is probably the most accurate study of the famous spacecraft I know of. Visit the model category in the arts section: We’ve added a new section on our website called, "2001 Engineering" which this section is the most comprehensive study on all technical engineering accomplishments from the "Space Odyssey" films and books. This new blueprint is a work in progress and will change in time. The concept was originally created by "2001" fan Dana Lubich from California. He submitted his original research to us, "2001: A Chronicled Odyssey" as a gift and we’re proud to be able to share his work with all of you. In addition to this new section, I contacted webmaster, Bill Young who runs the 1964/65 New York World’s Fair website (NYWF), so we can use some of his images for "2001 Engineering." If you recalled that World’s Fair (and I was a bit too young to remember), it was around the time "Space Odyssey" was in post-production. But after visiting Bill’s website, I found the view of the future very much aligned to the ideas and vision of Stanley Kubrick and Sir Arthur C. Clarke take of the 21st Century vision in the sixties. The New York World’s Fair did showcase the "2001" car or the Firebird IV concept car. We hope to expend this section for "2010" in the near future: We showcase Eva Mak’s "Retro-modern Apartment in Hong Kong." When I was first introduced to Eva and her website, I was blown away by her knowledge of combining modern-retro, minimalism approach with the influences from "2001." To see Eva’s apartment, visit the furnishing category in the arts section: Our press section has been updated with older press releases about our "2001" exhibitions. Revisit the World Tonight press section to read about our efforts: Our Sitemaps are updated: Michael Alexander post his experience about "2001" titled, "How 2001 made me realize living out one's life was really the "ultimate trip"!" in the Retrospect page. Mike Jackson, HAL Screensaver: Lately, I’ve been swamped recently from my job at NASA and the website, so if you are waiting for an e-mail reply or snail mail, I should be able to respond in another week. But please continue to send anything you have on "2001/2010" news to report for the World! I’m also looking for pictures from the Tech Museum to share on my website if you were there last year. Until then… See you next Wednesday (Frank).
