July 25, 2003:

Greetings from Dennis Gonzales

Welcome to our 44th edition to the World Tonight newsletter, dedicated to "2001: A Space Odyssey", space exploration and the unknown.
The nighttime launch of MER 2, "Opportunity", was a spectacular sight to behold! After a week of delays from weather and technical problems, the anticipation was worth the wait. The Columbia Accident Board (CAIB) had released dramatic information about the cause of Columbia’s fate. To review their reports, visit http://www.caib.us/

opefully as CAIB continues the investigation, the Return To Flight of the shuttle program will begin either in the fall or much later depending on the preparation of the remaining shuttles and the CAIB investigation. We’ll keep you posted on future TWTs.
The "2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY COLLECTIBLES EXHIBIT" website has grown the past 4-weeks with special additions to the Art category. We’ve added two new 2001 artists to our Gallery category and added a new section dedicated to "Space Odyssey" collectibles.
"2001" fan Mark Blunck who helped me with The Tech’s "2001" exhibit had informed me of original artwork from Roy Carnon being auctioned off at Christies in early 2001. So on November 21, 2002, I wrote to Roy with the help of Karen Christian from christies.com Client Service (January 2001). Although I took a very long time to contact Roy, about interviewing and displaying his 2001 artwork on my website, Mrs. M.J. Carnon wrote back to me on February 16, 2003, telling me that her husband, Roy Carnon had passed away. She had given me permission to place Christie's images of Roy’s work with Kubrick, which I am proud to present to you as a legacy of a great visionary from a great film.
The blueprint category in the Science and Technology section will be changed in September with new additions, so stay tune...

Discover magazine has an article entitled "Star Trek." "2001" fan Dana Lubich reports to the TWT about the August issue of Discover magazine has an article entitled "Star Trek." It describes the serious efforts of engineers to design a vehicle that could reach nearby stars within a man's lifetime, should there be discovered an Earth-like planet in some of these systems. The first of the designs (on pages 36 & 37) a striking resemblance to one of 2001's early Discovery designs. It would employ an antimatter drive to propel it to 66 percent the speed of light. This would allow a crew to reach Alpha Centauri in less than 50 years. It sounds like the universes of 2001 and Star Trek may merge. (It would be interesting to see Mr. Spock cross circuits with Hal. I'd love to see the dialog from that script!)
