Welcome to the 111th issue of The World Tonight newsletter dedicated to '2001: A Space Odyssey,' space exploration and the unknown. We've experienced server problems the last 3-weeks in redesigning the 2001:exhibit website. This has delayed us from opening the entire site for subscription. In fact, our service provider will shut down their web services on April 30th. We plan to move the site in two weeks, along with the HAL websites and the Official Gary Lockwood website. We've also introduced new products on Cafepress.com. Included are the first CD of our radio show from the 2001: A Space Odyssey Collectibles Exhibit (Gary Lockwood), two new Oversized Wall Calendars of all the worldwide 2001 exhibits, and the first Space:1999 exhibit. In addition to the new website design, subscription to articles, pictures, and blueprints to 2001exhibit.org will open at the end of June. We'll send another email to the grand opening in the next The World Tonight issue. And while we go through a transition, I've opened up the first 2001 social network website on www.ning.com. We're in beta mode and private until July. If youíre interested in joining the website, please send me your email address to webmaster@2001exhibit.org. And be sure you have cookies on to join ning.com.
The 2001exhibit has been promoting the Yuriís Night 2007 World Space Party at the NASA/Ames Research Center Facility and the Griffith Observatory in L.A. Yuri's Night, a global non-profit, has partnered with a team of event planners including Nexus and Symbiosis Events to commemorate Yuri Gagarin and explorers like him. Gagarin, a Russian cosmonaut, was the first human to enter space when he orbited Earth once in 1961 at the age of 27. Yuri's Night has been coordinating parties around the world on this date for the past 7 years. Of the 101 parties scheduled in over twenty countries this year, Yuri's Night Bay Area is scheduled to be the world's largest. The bay area 2001 fans attended the Yuriís Night at NASA/Ames Research Park and interviewed the speakers and performers. My co-worker, Brandy Dettmer and I also interviewed Anousheh Anasari. Her story appears in Space Exploration.
I also like to welcome Gilbert Huey, a long time 2001exhibit supporter. He'll start reporting NASA news on The World Tonight, starting with issue 111.
And I got a new snail mail address for 2001exhibit: Dennis Gonzales, 2001exhibit, P. O. Box 104, Moffett Field, CA 94035-0104.

"2001" TV/Movie -
Dana Lubich reports to TWT that science fiction 70s television is now on DVD: "I recently bought the DVD set for the 70s series Ark II. It concerned a crew in the future helping to get Earth back on its feet after centuries of decay.
The Ark itself looked like it drove right out of 2001, the uniforms looked like they came from Space:1999, and the sound effects came from Star Trek (with some stock music from Star Trek's Animated series). There were many other tie-ins to sci-fi series and movies, too.
There is one episode called Omega, where the crew matches wits against a super computer that's shaped like the monolith in 2001. The captain of the crew had to make chess moves to get through a security screen, and finally the computerís voice slows down like Hal's when it is deactivated. It shouts 2001!"
Here's where you can order it:

From the Yuriís Night Press Release:
Prepare for Liftoff!: Yuri's Night Celebration on April 13
On the night of Friday, April 13, extending into the wee hours of April 14, the NASA Ames Research Center will host a major celebration. You've probably been hearing rumors and reports, and I wanted to get more information to you. I'll let the Yuri's Night organizers share their enthusiasm with you in their own words:
Prepare yourself for something different.
On April 13, the Bay Area joins the world in celebration of space exploration in a unique convergence of artists, scientists, astronauts, performers and musicians.
Yuri's Night is a commemoration of humankind's first venture into space (by Russian Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin). This gathering bridges national, cultural, generational and social barriers to ignite excitement about what is new on the horizon in space exploration and to remind us of the magnificent feats of which humans are capable.
Yuri's Night Bay Area will be held at Moffett Field in the NASA Ames Research Center's massive Hangar 211. The evening begins with perspectives from pioneering space traveler Anousheh Anasari and Dr. Chris McKay, NASA Ames' world renowned expert in astrobiology and terraformation with the Space Science Division of NASA Ames Research Center.
April 13, 2007: Anousheh Anasari photo by Scott Beale / Laughing Squid.
The hangar and adjoining tarmac will be filled with cutting-edge interactive technology and science demonstrations, including innovations from the world of robotics, engineering, chemistry, and astronomy, presented by NASA and Bay Area scientists and engineers. Engage with space-inspired art installations and video documentary screenings: explorations from Ames' own Worldwind (interactive zooming from satellite altitude into any place on Earth), Gigapan (explorable high resolution panoramas from around the world), portals into Second Life and Burning Man Google Earth; and demonstrations of the ASME human powered vehicle and NASA robotics, including the next generation of rovers and a live robotics competition. Contemplate Star Zipper, created by internationally renowned artist Michael Light and collaborator Dave Rattray, AND large-scale sculpture from Michael Christian and Peter Foucault's Motion Sensor Drawing Robots.
Experience rare video works documenting art-in-space projects from local and international artists, along with multimedia installations from some of the Bay Area's most talented artists. See screenings of "Hubble: 15 Years of Discovery," a collaboration between European Space Agency and NASA; HBO's original production, "From the Earth to the Moon"; and Dr. Maryanne Galvin's "What's Going On Up There?"
Last but far from least, live dance and acrobatics fused with audiovisual performances will be coordinated with a world-class lineup of live electronic music that will continue throughout the night, including:
Plaid, Telefon Tel Aviv, and Bluetech. Outside on the tarmac, the SPACE COWBOYS will have their own dynamic lineup of DJs aboard their interstellar party transporter, the UNIMOG.
Come join us in celebrating the accomplishments of humankind on a collective cosmic journey through space, time and our wildest imaginations.
